Family members who provide care to mentally ill relatives bear a significant burden and often feel helpless in dealing with the problems associated with severe and persistent mental illness. Many researchers report the link between professional support to caregivers and their burden experience. Nurse can help families cope by fostering a sense of control in managing problem behaviors.
This study was conducted to investigate whether the professional support to caregiver would increase sense of control, reduce burden, and increase well-being of caregiver. This study was a quasi-experimental study using a non-equivalent control group posttest only design. The 68 families of mentally ill persons were assigned to experimental(24families) and control(44families) groups. The intervention program was developed to help caregivers better manage the caregiving experience. After four 90-minute sessions, data was collected by a written questionnaire. The written questionnaire consisted of Demographic Questionnaire, Mastery Scale, Burden Assessment Scale, Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale.
In conclusion, it was found that an professional support program was an effective nursing intervention for increasing caregiver¢¥s physical health. But no other significant differences were observed between experimental and contral groups.
